Fagopyrum esculentum / buckwheat 2,5 kg

Productcode: 932285

Buckwheat is exclusively a summer crop. It is very sensitive to night frost and has a short growth period of three months (it was also referred to as 100 days). The crop is sensitive to strong wind, rain and hail. Plowing and re-sowing is sometimes necessary.

The sowing time is between mid-May (after the ice saints) and mid-June, sometimes even after the longest day. It can be sown wide or in rows with a distance of 30 cm and 3 cm deep. Due to the rapid growth, it is a good ground cover. They did experience problems with the weed European rooster's leg.
When the crop was approximately 10 cm high, weeding was sometimes used. This had to be done very carefully because buckwheat is a delicate crop that is easily damaged.

Buckwheat needs a lot of heat and preferably dry calm weather during flowering. It is not very sensitive to drought, a lot of precipitation promotes vegetative growth at the expense of grain ripening. 30-45 kg of seed is needed per hectare and 10 kg more for wide-sided seeding.
In contrast to the current apiculture, which is mainly focused on spring donations, the old hive for honey harvest was focused on the heath. The spring and early summer harvests were necessary for the nations to gain strength and to get enough swarms during the swarm time. The expensive heather honey could then be collected on the heath.

The exception to this was buckwheat. The buckwheat, flowering in August, could already yield a good honey yield under favorable conditions. At harvest, the combs were cut, the honeycombs set aside, and the brood was sometimes spiked from two peoples at once in a new hive. After this, the bees still went to the heath (or could stand still).

Birds are important for spreading buckwheat (seed), although the farmers prefer to see them disappear. The bees are the most important insects for pollination. The flowers only bloom for one day, only open in the morning and close again immediately after midday. The bees fly the buckwheat between nine and twelve in the morning (winter time). They get both nectar and pollen. Brown aromatic buckwheat honey was highly sought after. The optimum nectar separation takes place between 16-26 ° C and takes one to four hours.
