Lucerne (Medicago sativa) is a perennial. Depending on variety and climate, the plant can grow to be five to twelve years old. With a height of up to 1 m and clusters of small blue flowers, the plant looks like clover. The plant has a deep and powerfully developed root system that can extend up to 4.5 m. This allows the plant to survive during temporary droughts.

Like other species from the butterfly family (Leguminosae), the plant has the capacity to bind nitrogen using nitrogen-binding bacteria, so that it can produce protein-rich food independently of the presence of nitrogen in the soil.

Lucerne is one of the few plants that are self-toxic. As a result, it is not possible to sow alfalfa again between old plants. The old alfalfa must therefore first be plowed under before it can be sown again on the same plot. However, it is also better to use crop rotation in connection with diseases.
