The esparcette (Onobrychis viciifolia) is a plant from the butterfly flower family (Leguminosae). A flowering esparcette looks a lot like lupine (Lupinus). The plant is both cultivated and wild in the Netherlands. It can be found in southern Europe along the road or in dry grasslands.

The esparcette is cultivated for use as animal feed.

The flower has a diameter of 1-1.2 cm and has a dark pink flower crown. The flowers form a stretched cone-shaped cluster that blooms from May to September.

The leaf is uneven. There are thirteen to twenty-five leaflets of approximately 3 cm long each.

The plant carries a pod that does not open. This pod is small, 5-8 mm long and has spiky edges.
