The plant is originally from California, where it grows on stony mountain slopes. The natural distribution area is located in California, Arizona, Nevada and Northern Mexico. The plant is wild in some places in the Netherlands.

The plant grows up to 70 cm high and has a hollow stem that is hairy at the top. The leaves are double sprung. The terminal, blue-violet to clear-blue flowers are rolled up snail-like.
